Phil’s Place was started in the same location at the center of the lower level of the Market at least 30 years ago by a guy called Phil from Trinidad. It was always a colourful, lively place, with calypso and reggae music playing in the background. Many people from the Caribbean shopped here because Phil imported a lot of fruits and vegetables from that area. It was the first place we saw such exotic imports as star apples, breadfruit, plantains, lychee fruits, pomellos, mangoes, hot peppers and fresh ginger. Phil has since sold the business and retired back to the Islands.
