Harry Witteveen came from Friesland, Holland, to Brantford, Ont., in 1948. He opened Witteveen Meats in 1951. His sons, Victor and Douglas, grew up working for the company and learning the meat business. They became partners in the family business in l976. In the l980’s they focused on retail and processed meat products. The original store on Hwy. 24 grew as their reputation for fine sausages and smoked meats spread and clientele increased. They added wholesale and retail shops at the Kitchener, London and Hamilton Farmers’ Markets. They improved the business with a computerized smokehouse and, in 2003, expanded into prepared heat-and-serve meals. |
